Cincinnati, Ohio was originally part of the Miami Purchase in 1788. Later that year, three settlers formed the town of Losantiville which would later become Cincinnati. The name Losantiville was made up of a number of dialects meaning "town opposite the mouth of the Licking River". The name was changed to honor the Society of Cincinnati, an organization founded by George Washington for Revolutionary War officers. The city became a village in 1802 and was later incorporated as a city in 1819.
Cincinnati is a city that is home to many first accomplishments, making the area and the country a better place. Some of the most notable firsts include first city to have a weather bureau, to have a professional baseball team (the Cincinnati Red Stockings later became the Reds), to have an evening baseball game, first city to allow for open heart surgery, and this is only a small portion of the firsts that Cincinnati has experienced.
The city of Cincinnati is home to a number of fine attractions and reasons to not only visit, but to make the area your home. The city is home to numerous colleges such as the University of Cincinnati, Thomas More College, Miami University, and Xavier University. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy Major League Baseball with the Reds and Football courtesy of the Cincinnati Bengals. Community togetherness is promoted through a number of city events that draw in thousands of tourists to the area. These annual events include holiday celebrations, as well as Summerfair, Riverfest, the Appalachian Festival, Renaissance Festivals, the Festival of Lights, Oktoberfest, and much more. The city also offers a large amount of outlet malls and shopping centers, hundreds of unique dining experiences, and attractions such as Paramount's Kings Island, the Cincinnati Zoo, Krohn Conservatory, the Newport Aquarium, and Perfect North Slopes Ski Resort.
