Columbus is the largest city and also the capital of the state of Ohio. The city is located along the Scioto River in central Ohio. Columbus was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Eventually, the first white settlers moved into the area in the 1700s and named the area Columbus after the famous explorer, Christopher Columbus. The city would eventually become the state capital in 1816 and has remained the capital ever since. Today, Columbus is home to over 700,000 people, a strong economy, and an excellent school system that starts at preschool and remains excellent throughout the upper levels of education.
Manufacturing and government jobs account for a large part of the success of the economy. The manufacturing industries offer jobs in textiles, consumer goods, and metals. Columbus offers a bustling cultural scene that includes the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Opera Columbus, BalletMet, and several museums including the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), the Columbus Museum of Art, and the Ohio Craft Museum.
Sports enthusiasts have a number of options to enjoy in Columbus. One of the most popular options is college football at the popular Ohio State University. The football season is one of the busiest seasons in Columbus, with thousands of tourists visiting the city to watch a game at the Horseshoe, which seats over 100,000 people. The Columbus Clippers are the triple A baseball team for the New York Yankees. Columbus is also within two hours of two Major League Baseball teams, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians. Additionally, there are two pro football teams within two hours, the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals.
