Rockwall's geology is also its identity. The town got its name in 1851 when settlers discovered a rock wall beneath the proposed town site. Some speculated that the wall was manmade by an ancient civilization, while others believe it to be a geologic phenomenon caused by weather sand dikes along the Balcones Fault line. One stone weighing about two tons was unearthed and had pictographs etched on it. Outcroppings of the stone wall can still be seen throughout the county. The town was established in 1854.

Rockwall's other identity derives from its location along the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, a 22,745-acre reservoir on the East Fork of the Trinity River. Four marinas and three public boat ramps provide access for fishing, boating, and sailing. Two yacht clubs are famous for their sailing regattas. Golfers love the scenic golf course along the lake.

Downtown Rockwall maintains the appearance of its small town roots, yet the city is rapidly growing. The current population is just over 25,000, whereas in 1980 it was about 6,000. This rural, small town life suits many families. With one of the highest ranking school districts in Texas and the nation, it's no surprise that the town is growing.

City government is focusing efforts on maintaining public access to the lake as well as allowing development to enhance the appeal. Rockwell attracts high tech companies such as to Pilgrim's Pride Data center and GE Digital Data. Median family income is $75,121 and median home value is $155,600. Median age is 37 years.

With only 22 miles to the Dallas Metroplex, Rockwell residents have access to numerous cultural and sports venues. But there is also plenty to choose from close to home.
