The area that would one day become Plainfield was purchased in 1822 by Jeremiah Hadley. A decade later, after Hadley had done nothing with it he would sell it to his son Elias. Together with Levi Jessup, the two men would lay out the town in 1839. The town was incorporated at this time, but the incorporation didn't work out. Eventually the town would be incorporated again in 1904 and it has remained that way ever since. Today, Plainfield is home to close to 20,000 people and is one of the most populated areas in Hendricks County, Indiana.
