In the beginning, when Southport was first formed, it went by the name Smithville. In 1887 the name was changed to Southport because the residents wanted to convince the state to place a port there, as they were a water town. While the port ended up heading to Wilmington, the town of Southport made due without it and continues to grow and thrive with each changing year.
