Murfreesboro was formed in 1811 with the name Cannonsburgh. The original intent of this city was to be the Rutherford County, Tennessee County Seat. Captain Lytle, the original owner of the land that was used to make the city, requested that the name of the city change to Murfreesboro to honor a friend of his, Colonel Hardy Murfree. The city became recognized by the state in 1817 and from 1818 until 1826 served as the state capital of Tennessee.
