Mukwonago was inhabited by the Indians in the 1700s. The city got its first residents in 1836. This marked an almost immediate growth period with new homes and businesses following along quickly. During this time and into the 1900s, the town was primarily a farming community. However, as time wore on things changed and the city became known for tourist attractions and neighborhood resorts. The Village and the town would later be incorporated in 1905, albeit separately. The history of the area is very important to the residents of Mukwonago. In fact, the first home in the area, built by Sewall Andrews is still standing, serving as the Mukwonago Museum.
Mukwonago offers a number of annual events to encourage residents to participate in the community. Residents are able to enjoy Maxwell Street Days, the Mukwonago Lions Easter Egg Hunt, Mukwonago Summerfeste, and numerous parades celebrating various holidays.
