Sixty-seven percent--or nearly twenty-three miles--of Little Elm consists of shoreline on Lewisville Lake, and that's why it's known as The Town with the Lake Attitude. Living in Little Elm is almost like being on permanent vacation. The town prides itself on its small town feel where neighbors still help each other out. There are old-fashioned festivals, cooking contests, heritage events, annual music by the lake, 5K runs along the lake shores, and fireworks all the time.
Water has always been a reason to live in the area. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited mostly by Native American tribes who lived along the creeks, which provided water for people as well as wildlife. Settlers also found a rich source of timber which provided fuel in the harsh winters and fertile soil for crops. Little Elm and the Peters Colony were chartered in 1841 as part of the Republic of Texas.
The word seems to be getting around about this cozy little town, because Little Elm is the fastest growing community in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, experiencing 466% growth since the 2000 census when the population was 3, 646. Today the town boasts 17,150 residents. Statistically, Little Elm's median age is 28.1 years; median household income was $50,281 in 2000; and median house value in 2000 was $113,700. Big box stores have discovered this growing city, bringing in jobs and providing residents shopping where they live.
Even though Little Elm has grown enormously, the city government has been careful to manage and plan growth in order to preserve and retain the lakeside village atmosphere, while also taking the opportunity to create new amenities, such as:
- A new outdoor amphitheater with sunset views of the lake
- A lake trail system that will eventually connect all parts of town
- A new four-plex baseball complex
- A new sand beach and volleyball complex
- A new $14 million football and sports complex built by the Little Elm Independent School District on Eldorado Parkway
- Capital improvements, including new outdoor pavilions, playground equipment, and lakeside camping and RV sites
